Topics getting the most attention in Long Beach public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Sewage Spill Beach Closure
A sewage spill has closed Long Beach beaches to swimming, and health officials say stay out of the water until they clear it. If you were planning a beach day, pick another spot for now.
$50 Million Revolving Credit Facility for City Capital Projects
The Finance Authority signed off on lease revenue bonds that pay for Fire Station 9, the police crime lab and DNA lab, the Police Academy, EV charging stations, Belmont Pool and Convention Center improvements, plus infrastructure across the city. The deal also refinances 2019B open-space bonds. This is the financing mechanism behind a big chunk of the city's capital improvement budget.
Strengthening the Long Beach Values Act
The Long Beach Justice Fund Coalition asked the city to close SB 54 loopholes, strengthen signage, ban license plate readers and facial recognition, bar police side jobs with immigration enforcement, strengthen contracts, and add a private right of action. City staff countered that current policy already blocks federal data sharing and that a private right of action would expand city liability. A commission ad hoc will draft a support letter by late April.
2026 Point-in-Time Homeless Count results
The 2026 count shows homelessness in Long Beach went up overall, driven by a growing sheltered population while unsheltered numbers stayed flat. Staff point to rental affordability — studio rents especially — as the driver, with 4,600 renter aid applications in three months.
SB 1279 — speed safety cameras on Pacific Coast Highway
The new state law lets Long Beach add two speed cameras on PCH, where 48 people have died in traffic crashes since 2020. Camera locations haven't been finalized yet.
Natural Disaster Response
Massive waves just slammed into coastal Long Beach homes, forcing emergency evacuations. If you live anywhere near the beach, you need to check local safety alerts right now.
Peninsula beach erosion response
Successive December-through-February storms have squeezed the Peninsula beach down to the width of a dump truck in places. Staff said dredging will re-nourish the beach, and consultants are developing best management practices for ongoing backpassing and berm maintenance.
Severe Weather Preparedness
This year's El Niño is the strongest on record by ocean temperature readings, and king tides around Thanksgiving and Christmas could magnify storm damage along the coast. The city is shifting to proactive sandbag distribution with pre-filled bags at multiple locations, and urging residents to sign up for Alert Long Beach and build emergency kits.
Small Business Support Programs 2026 Review
The city's EDO department helped over 1,261 businesses this year with grants, loans, technical help and marketing. A new Safe and Secure program pays up to $1,500 for cameras and better locks to prevent break-ins.
Consolidating public comment periods
A first-reading ordinance would move council meetings to 4:30 p.m., cap general public comment at 30 minutes with 90-second speaking times, and close sign-ups at 4 p.m. Critics called it a crackdown on participation; the council softened it by allowing three minutes when ten or fewer people sign up.
